An Editorial Day at Denton Reserve | Yorkshire Wedding Photography on Digital & 35mm Film

There are some wedding venues that feel instantly made for photography, and Denton Reserve is one of them.
Set within 2,500 acres of Yorkshire countryside near Ilkley, Denton Reserve is a beautifully restored Georgian country house surrounded by rolling hills, woodland, wildflower meadows, a lake and expansive grounds. The hall itself has been carefully reimagined, bringing together its original period character with a much more contemporary, nature-led approach to design.
I recently spent the day at Denton Reserve for an editorial shoot, photographing the venue, styling and details across both digital and 35mm film. It was the perfect setting to explore the kind of imagery I love creating for modern Yorkshire weddings: natural, considered and editorial, without feeling overly posed.
A Yorkshire wedding venue with a difference
Denton Reserve feels quite different from a traditional country house wedding venue.
The Grade I listed Georgian hall dates back to the 18th century, but its recent restoration has given the interiors a much more relaxed and contemporary feel. Original architectural details sit alongside handmade lighting, natural materials, thoughtful furniture and a pared-back colour palette inspired by the surrounding landscape.
For a wedding photographer, there is so much to work with.
The sweeping staircase, elegant reception rooms, beautiful windows, textured materials and quieter corners of the house all create opportunities for photographs that feel atmospheric without needing to manufacture a moment. And then there are the grounds.
Beautiful grounds for wedding portraits
One of my favourite things about Denton Reserve is how much of the photography can happen naturally around the estate.
The scale of the grounds means you can step away from the main house and immediately feel surrounded by the Yorkshire landscape. There are open views, woodland, a lake and plenty of space to wander, making it particularly well suited to couples who want beautiful portraits without spending a large part of their wedding day standing in one spot.
For me, that is where an editorial approach to wedding photography works particularly well.
Rather than stopping everything for a series of heavily directed poses, I like to use the surroundings, the light and the movement of the couple to create photographs that feel effortless. A walk through the grounds, a quiet moment outside the house or simply giving a little space for two people to be together can often create much more interesting photographs.
Photographing Denton Reserve on 35mm film
Alongside the digital photographs, I photographed parts of the day on 35mm film.
Film works beautifully with a venue like Denton Reserve because of its softer tones, natural grain and slightly unpredictable quality. The combination of the historic architecture, contemporary interiors and expansive Yorkshire landscape gives the photographs plenty of texture, and 35mm adds another layer to that.
I don't see film as a replacement for digital photography. I love using both together.
Digital gives me the flexibility to photograph everything as it happens, from the smaller details through to movement and candid moments, while 35mm slows things down slightly and gives certain photographs a different quality.
The result is a wedding gallery that feels layered rather than overly uniform, some photographs crisp and detailed, others softer, grainier and more nostalgic.
An editorial setting for modern Yorkshire weddings
Denton Reserve feels particularly suited to couples who are drawn to a more refined, design-led wedding.
The interiors don't need to be covered in decoration to make an impact. The architecture, natural materials and surrounding landscape already provide a strong visual foundation, leaving plenty of room for beautiful florals, considered tablescapes, stationery and personal details.
It is the kind of venue where the setting can be part of the story rather than simply a backdrop.
And that is exactly what I look for when photographing a wedding.
I want to capture the things you've carefully chosen, but also the things you didn't plan: the way the light falls across a room, a glance between two people, guests wandering through the grounds, a dress moving in the breeze, or the quiet moments that happen in between everything else.
Denton Reserve Wedding Photographer
If you're planning a wedding at Denton Reserve, or looking for a Yorkshire wedding photographer for a country house celebration, my approach combines natural, documentary photography with a more editorial eye.
I photograph weddings across Yorkshire, the North of England and throughout the UK, using digital photography alongside 35mm film. My aim is to create photographs that feel relaxed and authentic while still being beautifully considered. Capturing both the atmosphere of the day and all the details you've put into making it yours.
Denton Reserve is a particularly exciting setting for that kind of photography: a historic Yorkshire house, contemporary interiors and 2,500 acres of countryside, all available exclusively for your wedding celebration.
If you're getting married at Denton Reserve and looking for a natural, editorial or 35mm film wedding photographer in Yorkshire, I'd love to hear about your plans.
