How to Look and Feel Natural in Your Wedding Photographs

One of the first things couples say when they enquire is:
"We're not very good in front of the camera."
The truth is, almost everyone feels that way.
Unless you're used to being photographed professionally, it's completely natural to wonder how you'll feel with a camera following you throughout one of the biggest days of your life. The good news is that beautiful wedding photographs aren't created by knowing how to pose—they're created by feeling comfortable enough to simply enjoy the moment.
As an editorial wedding photographer, my approach has always been about creating photographs that feel effortless, honest and timeless. Nothing overly staged. Nothing forced. Just thoughtful guidance when you need it, and plenty of space for real moments to unfold naturally.
It's Not About Posing, It's About Connection
Some of the most memorable photographs aren't created through complicated poses.
They're the moments where you've forgotten the camera is there.
A hand squeeze before the ceremony.
Laughing together as you walk through the gardens.
Sharing a quiet moment after the speeches.
These are the photographs that feel timeless because they're rooted in genuine connection rather than perfect positioning.
Throughout your day, I'll gently guide you where the light is most beautiful and offer simple direction when needed, but I'll never ask you to become someone you're not.
Choosing the Right Moments
One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding photography is that you'll spend hours away from your guests.
In reality, some of my favourite couple portraits take just ten or fifteen minutes.
We'll often step away during golden hour, find a quiet corner of your venue, or simply take a short walk together. These moments give you a chance to pause, breathe, and spend a little time together before returning to the celebrations.
The result is photography that feels relaxed, elegant and completely authentic.
Beautiful Light Does Most of the Work
One of the reasons I love photographing weddings at venues like Wilderness Reserve, Aswarby Rectory, The Ned and Cliveden House is because they offer incredible natural light.
Soft window light during the morning, golden afternoon sunshine, atmospheric interiors and candlelit evenings all help create photographs that feel effortlessly editorial.
Rather than relying on elaborate posing, I let the light, the surroundings and your connection do most of the work.
The Beauty of Film
Alongside digital photography, I also photograph every wedding on 35mm film.
Film has a softness and honesty that complements natural wedding photography beautifully. It encourages a slower, more intentional way of working and creates images with rich tones, subtle grain and a timeless quality that feels impossible to recreate digitally.
Blending digital and analogue photography allows your gallery to feel layered, artistic and full of emotion.
Trust the Process
By the time your wedding arrives, we'll already know each other.
Whether through your engagement shoot, planning calls or simply conversations along the way, my aim is for you to feel completely at ease. When you're relaxed, your photographs naturally become more relaxed too.
You don't need to think about where your hands should go.
You don't need to worry about smiling perfectly.
You certainly don't need to spend your day performing for the camera.
Instead, you can focus on the people you love, the atmosphere around you and the experience you've spent months planning.
Everything else unfolds naturally.
Photography That Feels Like You
The photographs you'll treasure most won't be the ones where everything looked perfect.
They'll be the ones that remind you how it felt.
The quiet anticipation before the ceremony.
The uncontrollable laughter during speeches.
The warmth of a hug from your grandparents.
The way your partner looked at you when nobody else was watching.
These are the moments that never go out of style.
They're the reason I photograph weddings the way I do, with a blend of natural storytelling, editorial composition and both digital and 35mm film photography, to create images that feel elegant, effortless and unmistakably yours.
